Okay, on with things!
Today is technically the first day of the Ginger Newtrition Love Your Liver Detox. If you haven’t joined yet, you can start at anytime (and today is perfect!)
Megan has done a great job of creating a very thorough set of information in her detox, and she also has a support group on Facebook where she is very active with answering questions and also offering additional information for everyone in the detox party.
Part of the detox includes recipe ideas for those new to a squeaky clean eating plan, and one recipe that caught my eye were her Protein balls or bars. Bill is doing this detox with me, because he has been impacted by our previous house that had water damage, as well as our current house that had the gas leak (we haven’t posted in detail about this yet, but will soon!) Even though he doesn’t have the symptoms of a toxic burden that I do, he has his own set of symptoms. He is a little prone to depression, typically seasonal depression, he still has some digestive stuff going on, major sugar cravings, and he gets an eczema type rash on his arms. All of those things are signs that there is an internal imbalance, and potential toxic burden in his body.
We live in a really toxic and stressful world, and those toxins create internal stress in the body that strains your adrenals, so doing what you can to eliminate toxins that you have control over (in the home, in your food, and in your beauty/skin care for example) and assist your body in eliminating those that have accumulated in the body is really important to overall wellbeing. So don’t hesitate, and join this detox train! PS-Megan does a much better job at explaining all of this than I did in this post, so definitely follow her on Facebook and Instagram!
Okay…on to the recipe! I wanted to make something tasty for Bill to eat when he needs a snack or wants something that tastes kind of like dessert, so I made my own version of Megan’s recipe. I saw the recipe used hemp protein and sunflower seed butter, but beyond that I just sort of made it up based on things we had in our house.
This concoction ended up including hemp protein (we like this one) which is high in fiber,
sunflower seed butter to hold it all together,
golden flax seeds for some crunch,
carob powder for a cocoa type flavor, shredded coconut for texture and flavor, cinnamon for blood sugar balance,
pink Himalayan salt for a good source of minerals,
vanilla bean for flavor. You could also use vanilla extract, but I only had vanilla extract with alcohol-which I typically wouldn’t think twice about, but figured I should use the real bean since this is a liver cleanse and all 🙂
Oh, I also added raw honey for some sweetness which is allowed on the detox.
Everything got added to our KitchenAid 3.5-cup Food Processor, and blended until combined.
Then I rolled the cute little balls in shredded coconut to make them look even cuter.
Bill loved it, and that’s all that really matters to me.
