This tangy barbecue sauce is wonderful over ribs, pulled pork, or chicken. Easy to make, and with no added sugars, this is the perfect primal sauce for a summertime barbecue!

Note, these instructions are written assuming the standard serving size, since you have modified the number of servings, these steps may need to be modified for best results
  1. In a sauce pan, heat coconut oil on medium heat.
  2. Add garlic and shallots, and sauté until soft and translucent.
  3. Add mustard, smoked paprika, chipotle, cumin, and salt, and continue to sauté (about 30 seconds).
  4. Add chicken broth, lime juice, maple syrup (optional), and tomato paste.
  5. Whisk all ingredients until smooth.
  6. Bring to a light boil, reduce to simmer, and slightly cover with a lid.
  7. Simmer for 45 minutes, and let cool.
  8. Serve with Pulled Pork or Grilled Chicken.

Notes

In place of the chicken broth, you can also use vegetable broth or plain water for this recipe.

      Hi,

      Just wondering if this recipe had actual chipotle or not in it. It’s not listed in the ingredients, but it is in the directions. I made this and added chipotle peppers and the sauce it came in and used the whole small container. Boy, was it really spicy. Didn’t have any maple syrup, so I used xylitol, a sugar alcohol that does well with heat.

      Put this with your Pulled Pork BBQ recipe and it turned out great, though, it was really, really spicy.

      This was GREAT! Had to do a variation due to time and ingredients. I used about 1/4 tsp of agave nectar in place of the syrup, cause I didn’t have any on hand. I also didn’t use chipotle, but did add a good amount of cayenne pepper to taste. I had about 18 minutes, so I threw everything in the bowl and threw that in the microwave for 33 seconds. Gave it a stir, repeated, then let it sit for a bit. i’m sure I probably lost some of the marvelous flavor-melding action that comes with slow cooking, but I still welcomed RAVE reviews on it, and will make it again in a heartbeat.

      I don’t know if i messed it up somehow, but it tasted more like a chili than BBQ sauce. I omitted the Maple Syrup, could that be it? Still delicious lol.

      So, I made this to go with meatballs as a “last minute” dinner, and I was concerned that it was going to be weird, because it was not like any BBQ recipe I had ever made before. I substituted a little cayenne and chili powder for the chipolte powder, since I don’t have that. I did not add maple syrup because I forgot to pull it out of the fridge. It was so good! It was not like any BBQ sauce I have tried before, but my entire family liked it a lot (five kids and a husband to please). I will definitely make this again.

      I made this to put on the pulled pork recipe I made and wow! I am going to have to make another batch so I have some handy in the fridge. This is my new go to BBQ sauce. Can’t wait to try it on more dishes now that BBQ season has arrived. I love the smoky tastes from the chipotle and smoked paprika.

      I followed the recipe to a T. This is a good base recipe but it was wayyyyy too spicy. I like spicy so I will definitely eat it, but I cannot serve this to a crowd. It’s like on fire. I will make it again and omit the chipotle pepper. Thanks for the low sugar recipe.

      I am new to cooking and was wondering how much Lime I need it says 1 1/2 of lime is that 1.5 cups, oz, or the whole lime? Sorry but like I said I am new to cooking. Thank you.

      this recipe was FANTASTIC! It is admittedly not completely a “typical” BBQ sauce, as it is not like a Sweet Baby Rays, but i adore this recipe because it gives me that smokey, spicy, and slightly sweet flavor i am looking for but without all the added sugar! My non-paleo family members even love it, too! :)
