Every male on my fathers side of the family has passed before their time. Of course the most memorable and initially life-changing was my father himself who was over 500 pounds the day he went in for gastric bypass surgery at 49 but never made it out of the hospital. That was 2001 and I was pushing 240 with a 42 inch waist. I dropped the weight but nine years later after two kids, a promotion at work, and some pretty bad eating I put it all back on and was on the path to adding "then some" to it. My blood pressure was out of whack and my doctor was midly concerned about my body's ability to process sugar. I was a nervous wreck because my two girls mean everything to me and I couldn't follow the same path as my father. That's when I stopped saying I couldn't and started saying I wouldn't.
I joined Crossfit Retribution in Westminster, MD and shortly thereafter particpated in the Lurong Living Paleo Challenge. I had six total non-paleo meals in those ten weeks and dropped 15 pounds. More importantly than that I was shredding inches away. By the end of the challenge my 40's were too big and my 38's had some wiggle room. And that's only the beginning.
Within four months I passed a huge milestone as I did my first ever chin up at 31 years old. Now I'm finishing up my second Paleo challenge run locally by my gym. I've dropped another 20 pounds and wearing some 34 inch pants. My blood pressure is right back on track and I feel amazing.
