Hang on …. @Oliver – I just looked at your website because I'm in Marshall Twp. also….I just realized it's your place where I pick up my Green Circle shares?!  Small world!

And, two more restaurants for the list -

Nola on the Square (Market Square downtown) – locally sourced/organic ingredients AND a great grassfed burger from  Ron Gargasz Farms!

Sonoma Grille (Penn Avenue downtown) – owned by the same people as Nola, with the same emphasis on local/organic….they, too, have a grassfed Gargasz burger!

Ya ya, I started Green Circle Farm w/ Erika back in 2009 and am now just a lowly drop point <g>. I couldn't convince my family to move to the sticks proper and so wound up starting North Woods Ranch when opportunity presented just a crow's mile from our house here in suburbia. Or, maybe all those Scottish Highlands are just 'round back of our house? <g> …

So excited to post about this! I don't know if anyone has heard of Red Star Kombucha but they are awesome! They used to be Pig Hill Cafe but are now strictly kombucha (the sign out front still says Pig Hill Cafe). They are located on Troy Hill (Lowrie st.)on the North side. They make the most amazing green tea buch that is on tap. They also sell it by the case and growlers. Because the alcohol in it is right above the legal grocery store shelf limit you have to have I.D to buy. Super cool people! I stopped by this Saturday and they gave me a huge free SCOBY to start my own deliciousness. Go visit them and try a sample you wont be disappointed! P.S Hayley I saw your Facebook post about a kombucha toast instead of champagne … These guys would be the ones to make it happen seeing how they have keg fulls lol

Hello!

As someone who is going to visit Pittsburgh in a couple weeks, I wanted to ask if you knew of places that are close to the David Lawrence Convention Center? I'm going to be hanging around that area for most of the day (Engineering Conference) and I'll be staying near Shawnee Street. And I won't have a car, but I am willing to take the bus, so also directions by bus to some of the places (Habitat, Meat&Potatoes seem to be nearby) could be awesome as well!!

Thanks!!!

Alan

Meat and Potatoes is an easy walk from the convention center as is Sonoma.  Both are wonderful.  Habitat is a bit of a longer walk, but still pretty easy.  Legume is an easy bus ride to Oakland.  It may be my favourite . . .

You're also just a block or two from the Strip District and you'll see a lot of references to that area in the lists above.  It's worth exploring.

Enjoy your visit to Pittsburgh!

I live out in Greensburg and recently purchased a CSA share from Saver Hill farms (** you don't have permission to see this link **)…I think you can add them to the list.

I workout as CrossFit Athletics and it's been mentioned in earlier posts but nobody posted a link (** you don't have permission to see this link **).

The other CrossFit box in the SS is at Integrated Fitness down towards the other end of the SS.

I also purchased a side of beef from Friendship Farms (** you don't have permission to see this link **) out in Unity Twp and when I spoke to the woman about how the animals were raised and fed she mentioned that they're out in the pasture all the time (which I've personally seen) but they are occasionally fed leftover bread from their bakery.  So while they're not certified grain-free or grassfed they are raised on rotated pastures and I've thoroughly enjoyed the beef I got from them.

Beware of servers who have no idea what Gluten is at Meat and Potatoes…

I hate to post bad reviews, but just be aware that this happened to me at M&P.

I went there a few months ago and ordered the Bone Marrow and a Hangar Steak.

Even though I asked specifically for there not to be bread on the plate, the waitress handed me a plate with bread on top of the marrow bones.

Strike one.

Then my hangar steak, on the menu said that it came with Perogies. I asked for them not to be on the plate. It shows up instead with Spaetzle under the steak.

Strike two.

I sent it back to the kitchen, where presumably someone scraped the Glutenous mass off of my plate and put the steak back on top of the gluten tainted spinach. Not a new steak, not a new bed of spinach, just remove the offensive material as if it had never been there.

Strike three.

I have a friend who works at M&P now, so I will try it one more time, but for anyone going there, PLEASE ask to speak to a manager regarding your food intolerance, because mine was not handled well by my waitress.

Thank you for this list!!! It will help me so much.  I live in Butler, and there are some really awesome places to buy local, pastured meat and vegetables/fruits.

Sutton Farms- Grass Fed Beef- they are usually at the Slippery Rock Farmers' Market on Saturdays and the Zelienople Market on Thursdays.

Metrick's Harvestview Farm & Market- Grassfed Beef, pastured chickens & eggs (only whole chickens), and fruits/vegetables

Freedom Farms- EVERYTHING!  Pastured animals, eggs, fruits/vegetables.
