Hi! My name is Kim and I'm from a small town in Ohio. I'm 29 yrs old and after spending years overweight and seeing my grandparents suffer from several diseases, decided at the age of 26 that I wanted to live a healthier life to hopefully spare myself the anguish they were/are going through. I started by simply walking daily, then paying attention to my portions. I eventually worked up to daily workouts and calorie counting and had some success.
My husband was overweight his entire life and had already decided because of his family history, and his own high blood pressure and cholesterol that he was going to die young and had accepted that. In Dec 2011 he was scheduled to have back surgery to repair a bulging disc and was admitted for high blood pressure at his pre-op appointment (240/180). This scared him into wanting to be healthier so he asked me to help him with counting calories and he started working out several times a week for PT.
Fast forward to this March. We had both lost a considerable amount of weight total (me 100lbs total though I had put some back on, him 80 lbs but had also put some back on). We were frustrated with counting calories, always feeling hungry, eating something "bad" and feeling like we had fallen off the wagon and just declining from there. He had joined a local Crossfit class and I was going to Move2Lose at the local Y when a friend told me about her Paleo 30 day challenge experience. I bought It Starts With Food and immediately started reading and everything clicked. Paleo living makes so much sense to me!
We took the Whole30 challenge starting April 1 and went through mid-May to complete the journey with some friends of ours. We added back in dairy and realized DH doesn't tolerate it, added back in grains and realized neither of us felt good with them so we just skipped adding legumes because, eh, who needs em! DH was able to be off cholesterol meds for the first time in his adult life and is being weened off his blood pressure meds!
We were easily able to maintain through the end of May living a Paleo 80/20 (more like 95/5). We went on vacation the first 2 weeks of June and we were not nearly as prepared as we thought. So after feeling yucky for two weeks we are ready to be back where we were prior to vacation and/or even better. We are doing Whole30 again for the month of July to break the sugar habit (oh how quickly it takes over!) and by August would like to also be switching from all our regular household brand soaps, lotions, detergents, etc.
So any suggestions on where to start with Paleo friendly personal hygiene and household products would be great. I've been looking and it seems everything has something in it that I wouldn't eat, so should we put it on our bodies/clothes?!

Vinegar and baking soda are great cleaners. Primal Pit Paste is the best natural deodorant I've found (IT'S AMAZING), and coconut oil is great for skincare. Baking soda makes a good toothpaste, but I've found that I prefer Uncle Henry's toothpaste more than any other natural product I've tried. Hopefully that will get you started. Well done on all your hard work! Keep aiming for the prize - awesome health! :)
